Studies and tests have shown the efficacy of administering oils to horses in training and intense activity; oils are used more as a source of energy during activity requiring strength and endurance. When used as a primary energy source within dietary formulations, they help “conserve” glycogen during endurance-based activity, thereby preserving this substance for maintaining blood glucose levels and for direct support in activities requiring increased power and sprinting.

ENDURO PERFORMANCE contains a live yeast culture that has been shown to increase microbial activity. Saccharomyces cerevisiae supports efficient fiber digestion leading to improved assimilation of feed and forage.

Beet pulp is a highly digestible source of fiber that supports fibrolytic bacteria in the posterior gut and thus has a “prebiotic effect” on posterior gut microbes(Moore-Colyer et al., 2002). Microbial fermentation of beet pulp leads to the production of volatile fatty acids, through which butyrate (butyric acid) is produced. Current studies are investigating the effect of butyric acid on gut health and gut wall cell stability. Butyrate is thought to reduce inflammation and improve intestinal permeability(Stewart et al., 2017). Pectin (found naturally in beet pulp) helps support the generation of mucus secretions that line the intestinal wall and act as a barrier to microbial adhesion. Pectin forms a gel-like substance when exposed to acidic conditions (such as inside the stomach) and can protect the lining of the gastrointestinal tract(Zavoshti and Andrews, 2017).

Research has shown that alfalfa has a high capacity to buffer stomach acid due to its naturally high calcium content(Nadeau et al., 2000). The inclusion of alfalfa pellets in the ration not only provides a source of highly digestible “super fiber” but also helps support optimal gastric health through naturally provided buffering capacity.

Carbohydrates (grains and starches) have been shown to aid muscle glycogen replenishment when taken after exercise. Studies have shown that horses receiving a grain and starch meal after strenuous exercise will replenish muscle glycogen reserves faster than horses fed a fiber-only meal(Lacombe et al., 2004). ENDURO-PERFORMANCE contains ground oats, micronized barley, and micronized corn to promote recovery after exercise and replenishment of muscle glycogen reserves to support optimal athletic performance. All this with a percentage of grain presence in line with the horse’s body’s ability to digest starches, thus not exceeding the dose, per meal, of 1 g of starch per kg of body weight.
